A common name that kept coming up in my research though Vector Magic :. The benefit of using a web-based solution like Vector Magic is that you can easily create vector tracings of your images, without having to download any other applications or use any third-party plugins. Another downside to this approach is that when I used it, it was really slow. It took a couple of minutes just for it to trace my example image, whereas Inkscape and Illustrator are nearly instantaneous.

Between those three options you should be able to meet all of your vector tracing needs, as cumbersome as it may be. What are your thoughts? Have you tried any other solution that you found helpful? Read affiliate disclosure here. How does Affinity designer compare with Corel Draw? Searched a pic to trace, copy, paste to Inkscape, traced, copy then pasted it directly in to Affinity. Whilst I totally agree that Affinity are really missing the mark on this particular tool, especially since they included it with DrawPlus… it took me all of 10 seconds to do some copy and paste.

My first comment, great resource and community here! Glad to help! Definitely a high-end design tool! Small correction to your article. You list 3 solutions, the third of which is to use an online converter. But later on in the article you refer to the use of an online converter as Solution 2.

There is a bit of hostility in their forums from those that police it, directed at those who dear to request new features. So I will just avoid. This is really helpful. There are some great ::free:: tools out there, but can definitely be difficult to navigate!

Thank you. This is awesome! Watercolor colors are so complicated in their values and hues. I hope you have other Affinity Designer tutorials in the future. I mostly do stuff for web design, which often includes logo work and modding and touching up various images. I have a XP-Pen Artist Works for me.

After Adobe moved to a subscription model, I looked around and tried a few different apps trying to find a replacement for Illustrator. I was so happy when I found Designer. For me, Designer is way easier to draw with and manipulate drawings than Illustrator.

It is a great application. In terms of function and style, Affinity Designer is an impressive, low-budget alternative to Adobe Illustrator. I would not of paid money for this program if I had known. This will only be implemented if the dev team is able to achieve the output quality they are aiming for. There\’s plenty utilities able to trace images which you can then import to Affinity apps.

See my post above for a few of them. Using a third party utility for now shouldn\’t make your workflow much more complicated. I\’m attempting to convert a minecraft skin to vector, each individual pixel needs to be vectorized. All the tools I have tried turn the whole thing to smooth lines and all the pixel detail is lost.

I know this isn\’t normally what someone would want to do but I need to retain the pixilation of the minecraft skin in vector format. The skin file is only 64×64 pixels. Perhaps there\’s a way to convert the pixels to a larger grid that can be picked up by the vectorization algorithms. Or just zoom in an take a screenshot first.

Not sure I understand completely I\’m having to take a 64x64px png and stretch it over xpx. I don\’t know of any other way to upscale a raster image that small other then converting it to vector. If I could get the raster image to have enough detail at a larger size I think the vector tracing could work, but that\’s where I\’m at a loss as to how. I need to be able to print the minecraft skin gift my daughter. Therefore the 64px image needs to scale up to the x Obviously there\’s no way to print something that small onto that size of canvas so I wanted to vectorize the skin so it could be scaled as large as I need it. The problem is all the vectorizing software will smooth out the pixels which defeats the look of the blocky nature of the skin. You can set up artboards so that your inspiration, repeat block, and finished repeat square are all on the same document.

You know how sometimes you need to isolate a texture from a raster photograph Photoshop , then make it into a vector Illustrator , then paint some raster texture Photoshop , then add some more vector elements Illustrator and create a repeat? Anyone else? Well if that sounds familiar then Affinity will make your life a lot easier. All you do to move to the other Persona is click a symbol at the top and bam — all your raster tools are revealed. Affinity Designer makes it easy to export your files in all of the common file types.

Doing a botanical repeat? I made this whole repeat pattern solely from assets I saved from other projects:. You can not only use text in Affinity designer, but you can even import your own fonts. Because Affinity Designer fits so much processing power into a single program, sometimes it makes you wait for processing to catch up especially if you work with really complicated vectors like textured backgrounds or export large files.

I still use Procreate daily because I love the smooth, life-like drawing features it offers. So overall I would say Procreate and Affinity make a great team. Procreate is perfect for mocking up designs, using the symmetry tool, and creating and saving brushes easily. Affinity is great for making it professional and ready for print or client work.

It depends on your goals. Do you just want to create lettering designs or illustrations and post them on your Instagram page? If yes, you only need Procreate.
