A few weeks ago, preview versions of Microsoft Office products for were released. The release included Microsoft Office suite products, plus Project and Visio. All the products are available in desktop and office formats for trials. At least in my case, I have tried every possible way of removing version, but Microsoft Project kept crashing soon after it started. Here , and may be few other places, described a solution to an issue but it never worked for me and eventually I end up installing to a fresh VM that has no traces of prior version.

No changes in terms of design, or layout of tabs, or options within those tabs. So no learning curve there. Considering the first option most relevant to my requirement, I clicked on the first one Insert Milestone , and result is below:.

Not only does this help you list all the commands close to your requirement, it also performs the action. In the past, I have seen a need to have an interactive tutorial or guide that would help the user with Project options while scheduling.

This option can fill that gap to some extent. Timelines were introduced in Project , which were another way of presenting an attractive summary of your schedules. In Project , it has moved another step forward, you can now create more than 1 timeline within the same schedules. The much awaited option, though not visible yet but will be in either a final version or once you connect Project with Project Server , is Resource Engagement. Microsoft Project is a great scheduling product. Combining it with Project Server can enable an organization to have a complete Project and Portfolio Management suite which can help increase the efficiency of project management activities. In Microsoft Project the multiple Timeline Views option, and an option to manage Resource Engagement definitely adds great value to an already great product. You can also import data from Microsoft Excel or SharePoint to create a template.

Gantt charts: Project gives you a visual snapshot of your projects with Gantt charts. A Gantt bar chart lets you quickly see how the various tasks of your project are progressing and view the relationships between tasks as well as the status of your project schedule.

Project lets you create a new single or recurring task, summary and subtasks, task dependencies, and two tasks to show their relationship. You can adjust timeline units to zoom into and out of a project\’s timeline.

You can also have control over the formatting of charts and can change the color, shape, height, and pattern of Gantt bars; add text; and display task names. Generate reports: Project comes with a collection of predefined reports to let you quickly view the progress of your project, check costs, and see how your resources are allocated.

Dashboard reports include burndown charts, cost overview, upcoming tasks, and work overview. Resource reports include overallocated resources and resource overview. Cost reports encompass cash flow, cost overruns, earned value reports, resource cost overview, and task cost overview.

Progress reports cover critical tasks, late tasks, milestone reports, and slipping tasks. If one of the predefined reports isn\’t showing what you need, Project comes with report templates to help you build a custom report with charts, tables, or side-by-side charts to show the status of a project, and past and upcoming milestones.

For any report, you can change the data, tweak the look of the report, and convert an existing report into a template to use with future projects. You can customize timelines for any data you choose and share with other team members or stakeholders.
